A little but encouraging news about Petro. The guy himself is undergoing a complex course of treatment within the Biotech project. Within it, the doctors are trying to save and restore his leg, as Petro had stepped on a mine and nearly lost his leg. We, the volunteers at People’s Project, are raising funds to pay for the whole course of his long-term and problematic treatment. Recently Petro’s mother donated a sizeable amount to the Project’s account: some good people came up to support her. These funds were sent by Baranivka local community in Zhytomyr region; another sum was raised at the university where the guy is studying, and Petro himself thanked his fellow students and all sympathetic people heartily; in addition, certain amount was contributed by some kindhearted individual. Just thanks to these donations we got the chance to pay another bill from the clinic and therefore to pay the full cost of the treatment’s first stage.
Petro has undergone the first phase of treatment: now the guy is recovering at home getting himself prepared for further surgeries. Within the first stage he underwent a number of large scale restorative surgeries to save the remains of the limb where it was possible. His injury is rather complicated: the mine explosion destroyed most part of the foot, so the doctors had much work to do. Still, the results are rather encouraging for today: now amputation is no longer an option, and newly transplanted tissues do quite well; a broken shin has fused up, so soon the doctors will start to restore the damaged skeleton of the foot.
Before and after: yes, the heel bone is still absent as it takes time to grow it up anew. But amputation is not being an option any longer
Here is where cell technology is to be applied: the previously taken biomaterials are being cultivated at the lab: they will be used for restoration of bone defects and sculpting of new bone structures instead of the damaged ones and, probably, even for growing up the new cartilage. The foot is one of the body’s most sophisticated structures: it consists of 26 bones and is supporting the weight of the whole body evenly distributing the workload while walking, running, jumping and all heaving actions. That is why the maximum restoration of tissues and renewal of their functions ensures Petro’s prospect ability to walk on his own two legs without restraint, as well as to live a full life.
One of the latest photos: actually, this Ilizarov apparatus has been already removed as well, and now it is time to wear just a gypsum plaster
And dear friends, we have to ask for your assistance once again. We are urging you to participate in treatment of wounded and make your contributions to the «Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded» project’s account. To pay the full cost of Petro’s treatment we need to accumulate quite a big sum which makes over 200,000 UAH. The state is not going to sponsor us, it is out of a question now, so we can rely on ourselves only. However, on the other hand, the amount may seem not that huge if to take into account there are over forty millions of us, and if a thousand people donate two hundred hryvnias each, a young cheerful guy who nearly lost his life for us, will be able to live a normal life and even get the chance to forget about his dreadful injury soon. And if just for Petro’s needs we managed to raise and pay over half a million hryvnias, how can we leave him alone facing his troubles now?
