Another fighter has entrusted his health to the «Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded» project. The guy is only 19 years old, his name is Dmytro, and we are going to grow up a new shoulder for him.

A young marine from Vadym Sukharevsky’s battalion, Dmytro had suffered in the spring of 2017. He did not even have the chance to see the life: on finishing school we started to work to support his family, and when he turned 18, Dmytro signed a contract and went to the army. Under a hostile fire the guy’s shoulder got hit by the enemy’s expanding bullet. His arm was almost entirely torn off: the joint got smashed out, muscles torn and central blood vessel damaged. A heavy blood loss placed Dmytro to the brink of death; luckily, his comrades and medics’ efforts saved his life.

In hospitals, doctors stabilized the guy’s condition and performed a few reconstructive surgeries to save the arm from amputation. But this was where capacities of the conventional medicine reached their maximum, as restoration of the joint suggesting application of the traditional methods only, is still impossible. Maximum they could have allow was an implantation of an artificial joint or arthrodesis, that is firm fixation of the remains of shoulder bone to the scapula. Still the first option was hardly possible to implement as an artificial joint has to be attached to something, while the majority of corresponding bones gone simply destroyed; moreover, certain parts of the broken bones failed to fuse up. As to arthrodesis, this is not the best option for Dmytro as well: it will make the guy’s arm practically immovable and non-functional.

The treatment that Dmytro is going to undergo within the Biotech project, will take long time: the guy’s case is similar to that of Roman for whom we are restoring the shoulder joint as well. The process of Roman’s preparation for the main surgery took almost a year; nearly the same amount of time the project’s bioengineers needed to grow up necessary bone fragments of highly complex profile, and only some time ago implanted them into the injured area. Soon Roman will arrive for examination: the doctors will check the progress of restoration, to adjust the course of his treatment and make conclusions regarding application of the same method to Dmytro. To summarize, we can say: both guys got their chances thanks to the technologies of cell regeneration applied by the medics of ilaya clinic within the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project.

For now, Dmytro has underwent preliminary consultations, check-ups and went to Mykolaiv for some formal reasons; in two weeks, when he is back in the capital, Dmytro will face first serious procedures, namely sampling of cell materials and probably even the preparatory surgery. In our turn we, the volunteers at People’s Project, will have to take care about the financial side of it, as all equivalent treatment within the Biotech can be paid for at the expense of your donations solely – you can approximately estimate the whole scope of work judging by the Project’s report. We have already abandoned hope to rely upon the Ministry of Health officials’ sympathetic attitude to our wounded defenders or the state’s assistance: we just do what we can do the best, accurately and in time. Thanks to this, the heavily wounded guys who lost their last optimism, have the opportunity to return to normal life.
