23.09.2016: New shoulder from several cells: treatment for one of project's most serious cases begins
Roman G, 26, a fighter in the 28th Brigade, wounded in Maryinka.
Right arm:
defect head right humerus;
regenerate defective humerus;
contracture of the right elbow.
Roman’s case is similar to Oleksandr, Sviatoslav, and Vladislav he has almost no head of the humerus, ie, the shoulder joint. Everything is complicated by the fact that Roman is missing most of the diaphysis (central division) of the humerus. Speaking simply, Roman has almost no shoulder.
The hospital tried to treat the bone, but it was unsuccessful. If the injury is not treated, and fusion does not occur: the remains of the humerus will tightly fix to the clavicle and scapula without the possibility of forming a joint. This will make the arm virtually immobile – no lifting or motion back or forward – just downwards. This limitation of mobility will lead to disability and if inflammatory processes begin in the bone it may even lead to amputation.
Cellular technology is the only thing that can help Roman. With the help of biotechnology doctors plan to restore the humerus and shoulder joint, and maximize return of the natural function of the arm.
Roman, a soldier with the 28th Brigade was wounded on September 26 2015 during a mortar attack in Mar’yintsi, just a few weeks prior to his demobilization. He suffured concussion, he partially lost his hearing and suffered multiple burns. Fragments damaged the right side of his body and ripped out a sizable piece of bone and muscle.
In only the first month after injury Roman underwent a dozen operations in Dnipropetrovsk and the capital’s hospitals and was in a coma. Last year, the soft tissue healed, the issue of the bone was dealt with in public hospitals. But the head of the humerus could not be healed, because even in foreign clinics offered Roman fusion – fixing the shoulder joint allowing him to save the arm, but rendering it stationary. However, biotechnology will restore the shoulder joint, and with it free movement and function of the limb.
Roman served for a year in the ATO zone, he was mobilized in the fall of 2014. He performed combat missions in Kurakhovo and Mar’yintsi. The soldier lives in the Kiev region and two of his brothers are also in the military. All the time in hospitals his loving wife Lyudmila was by his side almost never leaving her wounded husband – she dreams of his recovery.
