Another project participant in Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded has returned home. Now, Evhen must wait await his second phase of treatment while getting a little rest. Recently, at the iLaya clinic Evhen completed the first stage of treatment: preparing the shoulder joint, removed the fixation apparatus from his forearm, and sampling the cellular material needed to grow new tissue. While the cellular material is prepared in the laboratory, Evhen will stay with family and gather strength. He faces quite extensive treatment, despite a substantial discount from the project Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded, the value of all procedures is more than 600,000 UAH. Part of the funds have already been collected and paid for by bthe volunteers of The People’s Project, but the soldier’s treatment requires further significant investment.
Evhen is a career officer in Ukraine’s Armed Forces. In war from the first day, the scouts took part in many clashes and operations in the Luhansk region. There, in July, while Evhen and his colleagues successfully repulsed the enemy stronghold and and prevented an enemy attack on the Marines. Realizing the battle was lost, the terrorists covered the position held by the Ukrainian forces in a hurricane of fire. That’s when Evhen was hit and even though he was wounded, he tried to help colleagues who forcibly removed him from the line of fire and provided first aid. Of his combat injuries Evhen spoke to our volunteers:
Evhen’s injuries are extensive and require significant medical intervention. On his left hand the fourth and fifth fingers were significantly damaged. In military hospital amputation was suggested but he refused.
The right arm is even more difficult: firstly, the two bones of the forearm and there are bone defects. Military doctors suggest to set plates in place at the site of the defects but the bones are strongly fragmented: there is a high risk that the bone will not fuse and the situation will only worsen.
Secondly, damaged shoulder joint: the least effort humerus pops out of joint, causing frequent painful dislocations. Already transaction on Bristow should help, with the patient’s own tissue formed a kind of bone scar that has to keep humerus within the joint. In all, there are still problems with the foot, badly damaged ligament in his right knee, requiring additional surgery.
The face the injuries are still relatively fresh works to Evhen’s advantage. It is in this case cell technology can help with maximum efficiency.
The volunteers of The People’s Project have already paid for the first phase of treatment via your donations. However, the entire course of treatment costs more than 600,000 UAH. Of course, Evhen has a family to support and simply does not have that kind of money. Meanwhile, the state does not fund such treatment. So we still desperately need your help: to end treatment midway is to condemn a man who gave care was wounded in the course of protecting Ukraine.
