National hero Oleh Davydenko. Yes, this is about him
Believe it or not, he – is a true storyteller. For children he writes poems and stories, and for adults also, he teaches military affairs – so that they can defend Ukraine. Oleh had everything: as well as his writing talent, he was a miner and was also a master woodturner, just as the war began – he immediately moved to defend his homeland. In the hottest period of the war with his fellow soldiers he defended the village of Pisky and the infamous Donetsk Airport. The enemy appreciated the power of their defense and threw and everything they could at the Ukrainian soldiers. One day a shell exploded close to Oleh, fragments lodged in his arm and back. Oleh says sadly smiling, colleagues said the explosion threw him like a frog. As it turned out later he had done serious damage to his arm. Doctors gave first aid – somehow repaired what they could of his shoulder, extracted all of the fragments and in a short time, Oleh returned to the army, joining the ranks of 25th Brigade, where he became a scout. Almost a year fought on with persistant in his arm, until it became unbearable and his arm hung uselessly and actually stopped working.
Such an injury that causes severe joint instability is called “habitual dislocation”. The means the joint constantly pops out of joint and causes pain. The arm is not actually working normally or reliably.
When the situation became dire he was taken military hospital. It is a credit to the skill of the doctors there that Oleh underwent a filigree operation. Through a small incision in the bone the joint is fixed with special anchors – small pins, stitched together with special cords. From this system the joint is held together. Unfortunately, complications set in, he had a extremely limited joint range of motion, and severe pain that debilitated the man. His saviours came in the form of volunteers – who advised him to approach the project Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded, where he could be treated by experts of the highest class.
In the case of Oleh, stem cell technology was not used – he saved by the skill of Volodymyr Oksymets an orthopedic surgeon with experience in treating the most difficult large-scale injuries and wounds. As part of the project Oleh underwent a brilliantly executed operation by the Bristow procedure: where a selected piece of his own bones is used as a stopper, which stopped the constant dislocations of the shoulder and gave his hand back the normal range of motion.
After treatment in the “Biotech” initiative Oleh can function normally. And his joints no longer pop!
Today, almost a year after the main operation, Oleg returned to normal. He says the project really works wonders, because he had already become accustomed to the idea of living with one functional arm. To those who harbor doubts, he has one word that cannot be printed here.
For Oleh’s treatment we, the volunteers of The People’s Project, funded with people’s donations. All the money we collected were donations towards The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project. We use these funds to change the lives of men who who cannot be helped by state and public medicine. Their number is not decreasing, some of the guys are in the active phase of treatment, some await the next stage, and some seriously wounded soldiers waiting for their turn. The endless flow of money required to do this is collected by us. The cash inflows and outflows for the project can always track in our transparent reporting. We cannot speculate how serious the wounds of fighters are, unfortunately, though it is the sad reality that without our assistance and intervention these soldiers have only severe disability awaiting. So once again we call for your help to give these guys a chance at a normal life. Even the smallest donations are important.
