The alarming news. Just recently we wrote about a new patient of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project Igor. His condition got much more complicated. The Ukrainian defender Igor got a severe injury, and now his leg shortened on 5 centimeters. The remains of a broken femur are held together with an orthopedic pin, that crosses through the bone. Two years of medical care at the hospitals and seven surgeries have not corrected the situation. The bone is not fused, and doctors of public hospitals consider this case as hopeless.
One of the first days at the clinic
When Igor joined the project, he was suffering from the severe pain in the leg. Turned out, that one of the fixating screws, that was holding the pin in a place, got broken. That is why it was extremely difficult and painful for Igor to walk. Few days before the doctors at The Ilaya Clinic conducted and x-ray examination, and it turned out that situation is much worse. Not only the fixing screw, but also a giant fixing pin is broken.
Before and after. Not only one of the screws, but also a giant pin is broken
Igor is 24 years old. He served in the army before the war. Then he signed a contract and joined the ranks 28th separate mechanized brigade. Igor got severe injuries on August of 2014, when he got in an enemy ambush. From a squad of 24 Ukrainian soldiers only 6 survived. Enemy bullet damaged Igor’s left hip. Eventually Igor was demobilized. And now he continues the treatment. Also he studies at the university. The problem is that the fracture does not healing, and the wound is getting worse. There are troubles also with the right leg. But it is the condition of the left leg, that requires urgent surgical intervention.
Igor is a pleasant and funny guy. But it is very hard to smile through the constant severe pain
The fracture has not fused for a long time, and now the leg is in a very dangerous condition. In a few days the leg will be covered in a massive plaster cast to fix the leg. Now the only hope for the recovery is an early preparatory surgeries and cellular technology. Igor will have the broken pin removed. The remains of the bone will be fixed in the correct position with the Ilizarov apparatus. While the leg will be getting used to the new position the necessary biomaterials will be grown form of the selected cells. The bone matrix and an array of the specific stem cells will eventually form a new bone at the place of injury.
The life before the two years at the hospitals
Cellular technology is effective but also a very expensive kind of treatment. For the treatment of Igor the volunteers of The People’s Project must collect almost 500,000 UAH. The cellular regeneration of the bone is not yet financed by the government from the state budget, but they it is the last chance to save Igor’s leg and bring him back to normal life. Only with help of the peoples people’s donations to The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project Igor can be saved from the severe lifelong injuries. Join the project to save life.
