An update about Yuriy. We wrote about this courageous man recently after both legs were surgically corrected due to arthritis and the first part of autologous cell material was introduced into one knee. Although Yuriy’s injuries are of non-combat origin, he was still given the opportunity to participate in the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project. After his illness worsened because of front-line life, age is not the youth, and load several years at the forefront felt confounded.
Yuriy prior to treatment. Distorted legs, walking is painful and difficult.
His condition worsened during his service
Yuriy is suffering from a severe form of osteoarthritis – the cartilage of his knee deteriorated rapidly due to carrying weight, making movement extremely painful for Yuriy and practically impossible. Also because of the illness deformation of the bones has occurred.
An X-ray taken during treatment: a layer of cartilage is missing, bone rubs against bone.
It hurts? Sure!
Recently, Yuriy completed another stage of this high-tech treatment – to the left knee a second portion of material saturated in the patient’s own cells was introduced. Eventually, under the supervision of doctors, the new cells will become cartilage. There is still a lot of work ahead: Yuriy has to develop the new joint, thereby adjusting the correct form of the cartilage surface, doctors will have to monitor the progress of recovery, and then conduct the same operation on the right joint.
For comparison: Left – the left knee prior to treatment. Right – some time after the introduction of cellular material and moving the bone to the correct physiological position: visible layer of new cartilage.
We hope in a short time Yuriy will fully overcome the consequences of his illness, and will again freely move and return to normal human life. We, in turn, still continue to collect funds for the treatment of patients with other serious injuries as part of the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project. We can only do that with your help – together we are the only hope for many wounded Ukrainian soldiers who the state, unfortunately, can not help. Get involved.
