Dear friends, let us meanwhile summarize the results of the hard work within the Second Front project that we have been doing for the past three months. Within this initiative, we raised funds, bought and immediately sent necessary equipment for our doctors.
At first, we considered only base hospitals intended to attend the patients with confirmed Covid-19. But this limitation vanished soon, when we responded to the requests sent by other medical institutions like the First Medical Aid Station, medical and sanitary dispensaries, clinical and paraclinical hospitals, and specialized departments of scientific institutes. But with the spread of the pandemic, everyone may catch the deadly infection as each patient that is attended by medics, can potentially prove contaminated which means clear chances for the medics to get infected as well. Eventually, the present scarce human resource of doctors and nurses will suffer inevitable losses resulting in the lack of staff necessary for further countering the virus.
Overall, we have provided PPE for over 20 hospitals, military hospitals, medics of military sanitary units, special dispensaries and other institutions treating patients with Covid-19, that is those hospitals where medics contact infected patients directly. We have sent them almost 20 thousand items of various protective gear including gowns and suits, respirators, masks, shields and goggles, even snorkeling masks remodelled to protective antivirus full-face gear. The cost of these purchases amounted to almost 600 thousand Hryvnias. This money had been partially raised as donations made by sympathetic people, and partially re-allocated from our other current projects; a number of needs turned out to be so urgent that we decided to redirect certain sums to these from other projects as we just didn’t see the other way out. As usual, you can find the itemized reports on the equipment bought and sent, in the project description; similarly, we published the full list of the medical institutions that we have supported, in the same section.
Also, we can state that in a number of hospitals we managed to completely satisfy the need in PPE for their medical staff, thus having secured them against the contamination. This PPE supply will be enough for the first time. Hopefully, the government is going to provide the necessary amounts of PPE for medics soon as well. We are still optimistic about that.
Unfortunately, the pandemic does not seem to cease, and the virus goes on. It cannot be overcome by any order or law, and despite certain easing of the quarantine measures the danger remains. For today, Ukraine has 24340 confirmed cases of Covid-19, from which 328 have been registered over the past 24 hours. 4542 cases, which is already a slightly outdated number, have been registered among medics: it happened only a couple days ago that 67 new cases were confirmed.
That is why it would be only logical not to give up and satisfy the latest requests we got from doctors. Hence, we have to buy more reusable protective gowns which are currently in great demand both at the Palliative Care Unit of the Kyiv Clinical Hospital #10 where doctors take care of the most difficult patients, and at Kyiv Maternity Home #3 where operative brigades work with infected pregnant women, new mothers and their newborns. Apart from this, we need to provide our doctors with five more antivirus protective face masks. Another hundred of the third, the highest, protection class respirators will go to the medical staff of the Maternity Home and the Vascular Surgery Operative Unit. Also, we need to buy a cardiograph for the Kremenchuk City Hospital: the device is needed to avoid sharing it between the “clear” units and those where infected patients are treated. That is why we ask you, dear friends, to make another, ultimate, effort and support our medics. When all their needs are satisfied, we will be able to say we did our best to prove effective.
So please join in as it is a truly finalising push!
