Dmytro has been the Project’s participant for not that long. A bit less than two weeks, still there are lots of news about him. Dmytro has joined the Biotech with his arm totally disabled – he was among those who held the positions in Promka (the industrial zone on the outskirts of Avdiivka) and got under a heavy shelling. The enemy bullet had turned his elbow into a mess which fused up haphazardly, and eventually the man’s arm got unable of bending in the elbow.
The doctors propose two solutions: either to leave the elbow as it is, or to implant the elbow joint prosthesis in it. Both variants are not the appropriate option for Dmytro who used to live active life and was in cycling. Because even with a prosthesis, the arm will inevitably lose in its functionality. So it is the technologies applied within the «Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded» project that give Dmytro hope for returning to normal life. And luckily, lately the process has advanced a bit.
This is the structure that is now keeping the remnants of Dmytro’s elbow collected
Last Thursday, Dmytro has undergone his first surgery at last. The biotechnologists have taken out the materials necessary for further restoration of the arm. The surgeons worked on the elbow itself: they examined the injured area and got it prepared for further surgeries. Now Dmytro needs to take some rest to get his organism strengthened a bit after the surgery, and the treatment will go on. Meanwhile, the situation has gone a bit more complicated than we previously thought. The treatment was postponed for too long, so as the result, for the moment when Dmytro joined the Biotech, there developed some cicatrices in his tissues. We are going to overcome these consequences a bit later, so we will keep you informed about the course of the treatment process.
The man’s case has aroused concern among the compassionate people. For many days in a row, the wave of donations for Dmytro’s needs has been keeping high. And there is certain primary outcome here: we have already paid the first bill for 52 thousand hryvnias. The rest of the accumulated funds will be saved for further payments for the man’s treatment bills. It is your sympathy and compassion that allows us to do everything to bring Dmytro back to normal life.
All incoming funds as well as expenditures can be easily tracked in our Project’s online report
Unfortunately, we have to ask for your assistance once more: total cost of Dmytro’s treatment made over half a million hryvnias, and unless your contributions we would have no other source to pay for it. The Ministry of Health refuses to treat this kind of injuries, as well as they are not going to sponsor such rehabilitation methods within the Project. Therefore, it is either donations, «The Biotech» and (often) the last chance, – or amputations, prostheses and lifetime maim. Just like in the Dmytro’s case: we agree that the amount is rather big. Still if split into lesser individual shares, namely a few hryvnias donated by each Ukrainian, – this money could allow us bringing back to full life not only Dmytro but dozens of his wounded comrades as well. Hopefully, with your kind help we will never leave our defenders in trouble.
