Four months since his primary surgery bone block fusion continues with the recipient bone and Oleg is using his hand to eat and even performing exercises.
The next stage of treatment – surgery to his leg is scheduled for October.
Oleg entered the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project following 6 months of treatment for his bone injuries in public hospitals. During this time, no recovery processes in the bones his arm or leg were observed because these injuries can not be healed by traditional methods. Oleg’s diagnosis: humerus bone loss of 12 cm and a nonunion fracture of the upper third of the femur with a defect of 3 cm.
Treatment of the soldier so far is as follows:
02/03/2015 – conducted sampling of cellular material (red bone marrow from the ilium and bone fragment from the fibula)
04/17/2015 – completed dismantling of the external fixation apparatus on the right upper arm, removed bone fragments and adapted them for resection, at the site of the bone defect was autologous cell-tissue material in the form of a 12 cm block, which was fixed with a metal plate.
04/21/2015 – external fixation device is removed from the right thigh and is replaced with a plaster cast.
05/20/2015 – preparatory operation on the thigh conducted – necrectomy fistula sequestration with a tamponade to treat a cavity created by osteomyelitis fragmentation of bone to confront the osteomyelitis and create better conditions for the introduction of cell-tissue material.
