The X-ray space shows the site of bone loss suffered by Vasil, where three months ago cell-transplantation of tissue material was performed. Now there is active restoration of the bone.
A few days ago Vasil’s Ilizarov apparatus was dismantled, and the 24th Mechanized Brigade fighter is already beginning to move his knee.
Vasil had a proximal tibia defect (100-120 cm3) with malunion, and damage to the knee joint.
Conventional medical treatment in hospitals over a period of almost six months had no effect, failure to treat the fighter in a timely manner meant he was threatened with amputation because of dysfunction of his foot. Stem cell technology was his only chance to save the limb.
– February 20, Vasil completed the first stage of surgery – dismantling of the rod system, full examination of bone defect site, preparation of the reception bed for replacing the defect, osteotomy of the tibia and fibula bones, transosseous osteosynthesis and sampling of cellular material from the tibia and spinal cord ilium.
– February 24, an X-ray was taken which showed good results of the first stage of treatment – straightening of the tibia axis.
– 4 April, On April 4 at the site of Vasil’s right tibia defect autologous mesenchymal stromal cells were introduced in the form of a three-dimensional osteoprogenitor material based on bone chips to a volume of 140 cm³.
– June 2, 1.5 months after primary surgery and X-ray was taken and the formation of new bone tissue at the site of the tibia defect tibia could be observed.
The required amount to treat the soldier – 321,987 UAH – was raised through contributions made by caring people to The People’s Project.
