The basic operation on “Aidar” battalion soldier Oleg took place 1.5 months ago. Now fusion of the introduced autologous cell-tissue material with bone chips can be seen.
Oleg came to the project with a right shoulder bone defect up to 12 cm and a nonunion fracture of the upper third of the right femur with a defect up to 3 cm.
Oleg was seriously wounded on July 27 last year near the city of Lutuhyne (Luhansk region). Large-scale blood loss threatened the life of the 23-year-old soldier who, as well as his serious injuries, had his body pierced by shrapnel in 19 places. Fortunately, Oleg was able to reach the radio and report his location.
Oleg was treated in public hospitals for six months, until he came under the care of the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project. By traditional medical methods the bone loss suffered by the hero cannot be cured and thus no restoration process of the bone in Oleg’s shoulder or leg was observed in this time.
Oleg’s treatment stages as part of the project:
03.02.2015 – sampling of cellular material was conducted (red bone marrow from the ilium bone fragment from fibula).
17.04.2015 – dismantling of the external fixation apparatus from the right shoulder bone, bone fragment removal and adaptive resection. At the site of the bone defect, autologous cell-tissue material was introduced in three-dimensional form measuring 12 cm, to which was affixed a metal plate.
21.04.2015 – removal of external fixation device from the right thigh. Leg immobilized in a plaster cast.
20.05.2015 – preparatory operation on the thigh conducted. Fistula sequestration necrectomy with had a charcoal plaster tamponade applied to a cavity in his glute to treat bone fragments to overcome osteomyelitis and create better conditions for the introduction of cell-tissue material.
The costs of treatment to a total of 390 752 UAH was provided by The People’s Project – Ukraine’s military and civil crowdfunding
