The next stage of the treatment of the participant of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project Oleg is in the process. For this guy this is a real breakthrough. The fact is that Oleg is one of the most difficult patients of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project. Oleg got the new bones of the right hand and right leg grown and got his crippled right foot fixed. Massive injuries and very serious complications significantly delayed the treatment process. The state of of the guy’s health caused serious concerns. A long time Oleg spent confined to the wheelchair.
Few minutes before the surgery
During one of the most recent surgeries Oleg had the humerus fixing plate removed. This will greatly expand the range of the movements for the hand, so Oleg can start to develop the restored hand. Next year the same surgery will be performed to the Oleg’s femur. The treatment of Oleg is fully paid for by the people’s donations. For the recovery of the guy the volunteers of The People’s Project gathered almost half of a million UAH.
The apparatus that held Oleg’s hand together
Oleg joined The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project at the beginning of 2015 in an extremely serious condition. This was preceded by the six months of the treatment in public hospitals, where Oleg’s life was saved and numerous difficult and complex injuries were cured. Unfortunately, the crippled bones of the right arm and leg were not fused and the damaged foot has been twisted into the wrong position.
The cellular technology gives Oleg the chance to get back to normal life
Oleg got to The Ilaya Clinic with the 12-centimeter defect of right humerus, 4-centimeter defect of right femur and varus deformity of the right foot. On top of that, progressive osteomyelitis shocked even the experienced doctors.
Tired and exhausted Oleg in the military hospital
Before the war Oleg lived in his home town Ivano-Frankivsk and studied at the History Department of the Precarpathian National University. Due to lack of money for studies in 2012 he joined the Ukrainian Army and served with the marines. Oleg took part in the liberation of Novoaydar, detention of the 14 separatists during the presidential elections on May 25. He was a part of the operation in the Shchastya City, and helped to take the checkpoint near the Metalist and other strategically important objects. Among his achievements is the capture of 18 members of the Don special force department and elimination of many Ukrainian soldiers from the surround.
That is how Oleg looked before the injury
Oleg was injured near the Lutugyne in the Luhansk region, where he served in the ranks of the Aydar Battalion. The positions of our troops suffered of a devastating bombardment of the enemy tank guns. Oleg was the only one of ten guys who survived. His friend covered Oleg and saved him with the price of his own life.
The fixing plate, which was removed after fulfilled its aim in the process of the treatment
During the process of the treatment at The Ilaya Clinic Oleg suffered a lot. First Oleg got samples of the cell materials taken, then he had external retainers removed. After that he had the place of the lesions of the bone cleaned and the infection suppressed. After that into the place of the injury of the humerus were injected cellular materials and fragments of the bone were fixed by the fixation plate.
Implantation of the bone matrix that will turn into the bone with the time
Then it was the turn of the right leg. The foot and femur were set into the right position, shortening has been eliminated, place of injury was fixed by the Ilizarov apparatus, the place of the defect was filled with the cell materials. As for today bones of both right arm and leg are covered with own bone material. Oleg gradually develops restored limbs. The fixation plate was just taken from the hand and the leg’s plate is next in line.
Oleg’s humerus before and after the application of the cellular materials. The difference is striking and obvious
In the case of Oleg, the latest cellular technology for the regeneration of the bone with help of the patient’s own cells were the last resort for full recovery. The traditional medical methods were powerless to grow 12 centimeters of the bone out of nowhere. Before the cellular treatment Oleg found himself on the edge of the amputations and severe lifelong injuries. And a half of a million UAH is nothing compared to the opportunity to return to normal life and the ability to move properly.
The arm is free from the fixation plate and ready for the rehabilitation
Unfortunately, half of a million is too big amount of money for most of the families of wounded defenders of Ukraine to have. The government does not finance this kind of treatment. But progressive and serious complications of condition of the patients’ traumas force volunteers of The People’s Project to turn for help. Only donations collected through The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project can give a chance to live a normal life most of the seriously wounded defenders. Join the project. Be the one who save life.
