Main surgery is now behind. Just recently one of the most difficult patients of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project Olexandr went through the main phase of a treatment. The bone matrix been transplanted into a place of severe injury. Then it was filled with cellular material. At the end an orthopedic plate fixed the bone. With some time cellular material will restore the tibia and fix serious fracture, which Olexandr suffered from for almost 2 years.
Alexander received terrible injury near Avdiyivka in January of 2015. Hostile mine exploded right under the defender’s feet. Shrapnel broke his right leg and torn his stomach. In a military hospital doctors saved his life and healed major wounds. However, leg fracture has not fused and leg shortened significantly. Doctors of one of the best public hospitals opened the question of amputation. They had no other methods to treat it completely.
Some soldier advised Olexandr to turn to The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project. He suggested to try a new kind of a treatment, which helped many soldiers. There was nothing to loose. Olexandr came to The Ilaya Clinic with a whole set of serious consequences of an injury and treatment. The leg shortened on 7 cm. Tangential defect (when there is a lack on a lateral surface of a bone, like it been shaved with a the knife on the side) of the bone concluded 12 cm. On top of that, fragments of the bone were infected by osteomyelitis, which was the reason why the bone has not fused.
Olexandr’s leg before the project
In terms of the project Olexandr already received an extensive plastic surgery of a crippled soft tissue, got a normal length of tibia restored, a place of infection cleaned and recipient bed (when the ends of the broken bone are prepared for the cellular material to be implanted) prepared. Just recently cellular material filled a place of an injury. In a few weeks they will fully restore the tibia to a primary size.
Olexandr revived a bit. He lost his heart before, being not sure, whether the leg is possible to fix. He said it is quite difficult to have a normal life, if you can only move in a wheelchair. Person is almost unable to leave home, it is hard to travel through the city, receive a proper job, people whisper behind his or her back, and no more walks with a son. Right now Olexandr come home, but be back in 6 weeks for a control examination to check, how the bone grows back together.
A complete treatment course of Olexandr cost over 450,000 UAH. All this money volunteers of The People’s Project collected as donations.
