Vitaliy is waiting for the treatment since spring of 2016, when he joined The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project. A year in public hospitals went in vain. Conventional medicine is not able to cure a severely injured leg. Doctors of public hospitals done everything they could, and send Vitaliy home. He reasonably decided to try the treatment with help of an innovative technologies. He thought, that if you lost your health protecting the homeland, then a treatment should be covered at the expense of the state budget. But this never happened. Vitaliy wrote a letter to the Ministry of Social Policy, requiring to allocate funds for his treatment. And there is no answer still, since the Ministry of the Healthcare of Ukraine is fiercely opposed to finance the innovative kinds of a treatment.

Vitaliy has an old complex fracture of tibia. He got this injury in July of 2015 near Artemivsk. He got into an accident during the movement of column of troops. Vitaliy’s leg was heavily wounded. The man went through 11 surgeries at 3 hospitals in Artemivsk, Kharkiv and Vinnytsya. However, the bone has not fused. In a place of a fracture false joint been formed, and all attempts to join the fragments of a bone with a plate failed. With a time a place of an injury got infected by a severe osteomyelitis.

With a bone defect of 6 centimeters leg, of course, shortened, and made it impossible to walk. Public hospital doctors done everything they could. However, a cellular technology in terms of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project can help. Ruined bones could be fixed with a use of a cellular technology. The only question is where to get the money for it?
While Vitaliy wandered through the state institutions in search of money for a treatment, a fake joint formed due to a wrong position of the bones. Leg shortened and became immobile. Vitaliy barely limp with a cane, and injured leg tortures him with a constant pain. The fracture requires an unusual treatment. Twisted tibia has to be broken again intentionally and set into a correct position for a long time before it would be possible to grown it back together with help of a cellular technology. The price of a treatment obviously increases in this case, and for Vitaliy this is a last chance.

And this will happen not soon. The resources of a medical project are not limitless. All medical procedures are financed at the expense of people’s donations, collected by the volunteers of the Ukrainian Volunteers Center The People’s Project in terms of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project. Unfortunately, there are no enough funds in it to treat all wounded soldiers immediately. Right now there are 12 defenders of Ukraine in a queue for a participation in the project. Primarily we treat the most difficult patients, whose state simply does not allow to wait any longer. And Vitaliy with his severely injured leg is not in that list yet.

So, what is next? It is unlikely, that the Ministry of Healthcare of Ukraine will allow to finance an appropriate treatment of defenders of Ukraine at the expense of a state budget soon. One after another we slowly treat injured soldiers at the expense of people’s donations. We collect contributions, ask for help ordinary people, look for support of sponsors. And, so far, this is the only option. Other way severely wounded defenders of Ukraine will end up with a life time injury.
