The ilaya clinic has welcomed the new “biotech” patient, Sergiy. For a guy once considered a difficult case by doctors: he has been examined from all sides of his injured leg, underwent necessary x-rays, then underwent a procedure to remove postoperative stiches. Sergiy began to heal as soon as he joined the project. Using the Ilizarov method he has gained a centimeter back of his shortened bones. Another 3.5 and he can move on to stem cell treatment.
Sergey was injured in a very serious accident. In winter 2016 he was serving at a checkpoint – kept as a part of a mobile unit, combating smuggling. At high speed, Sergiy was run down by a car driven by a drunk driver who did not even notice the checkpoint. With severe and multiple injuries, Sergiy hang between life and death at first a military hospital, then he was taken by helicopter to Dnipro.
For one-and-a-half weeks, doctors were fighting for his life, and later treated him for severe wounds of the head and abdomen. Unfortunately, his leg was not treated with the same success. Almost a year was spent treating the severe fracture of his tibia, but bone fusion did not occur and during this time his leg was shortened by almost five centimeters
Within the “Biotech” project, Sergiy will be treated to fully restore form and function to his leg, first restore the broken bone to the original length, and after that – treat his complex fracture using cellular technology. Sergiy was lucky a benefactor gave him the full amount of necessary funds even before he started treatment as part of the project. That is why we have no need to ask for help to treat Sergiy, however we always need help for the treatment of other guys. Your contributions to the project Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded give Ukraine’s seriously wounded soldiers hope of returning to normal life.
