After basic surgery to restore bone loss in his right foot Vitaliy is preparing for discharge. On July 30 the soldier from the 93rd brigade underwent surgery to replace his tibia defect with autologous cell-tissue material in the form of a bone block.
In September the next phase of Vitaliy’s treatment will start, until then he returns home to Kherson tomorrow.
Vitaliy joined the Bioengineering Rehabilitation of Wounded project in spring suffering the effects of fragment wounds to both legs and his right foot. The most complicated was the injury to his right leg, leaving a tibia defect (loss) up to 8 cm, a right fibula defect to 12 cm, and defects to the talus, navicular and second metatarsal bones. So serious were his injuries many domestic and foreign doctors even advised soldier undergo an amputation, or shortening of the limb by 8 cm.
However, the experience and technology offered by the iLaya medical center helped protect him from amputation and aims to restore the function of the soldier’s injured limb, even in more complex cases such as his;
