The other day one of the project participants in Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded went home, requiring further treatment after some time the fighter can spend with family. To the ranks of the army Yuriy voluntarily went despite health complications and in service in the ATO zone his chronic disease moved into an acute form. The 52-year-old Yuriy was suffering from severe arthritis in both knee joints, for which the only hope for recovery was cellular technology in the Ukrainian capital-based clinic ilaya. Yuriy has undergone several serious and painful surgeries as is the case with high technology – now Yuriy’s tissue should further recover on its own. The cost of treatment was paid in full courtesy of people’s donations to the volunteers of The People’s Project who gathered the required sum.
Yuriy is one of the modest but active “drops in the ocean”, thanks to whom Ukraine is changing for the better. He worked hard during events on the Maidan and pretended to be a postal employee and took out the wounded from under the batons and bullets used and fired by the “Berkut”. He subsequently joined the Automaidan and the beginning of Russian aggression actively participated in the blockade of the occupied Crimea. In June 2014 he went to volunteer in the ATO zone, where he commanded a rifle company of a composition of 39 infantry battalions and performed many combat missions in the hottest spots, including the hell of Ilovaisk. After demobilization he returned home where his chronic arthritis of both knee joints dramatically worsened.
In healthy joints bones can rapidly rub against each and the person continues to live and move independently. The surfaces rub, hard cartilage and bone without a hitch. Surrounded by thick synovial fluid as a lubricant, cartilaginous surfaces slide against one another with virtually no problems.
However, sometimes, with age or due to overload, the synovial fluid loses its lubricating qualities and the cartilage is destroyed. The articular surfaces of bones lose integrity and bone begins to wear off against bone. Of course, the full movement of the joint can not be achieved. Worse, all is accompanied by extremely strong constant pain. Further, and even worse – the damaged bones are deformed, and recovery is not possible: the joint becomes virtually incapacitated.
The case of Yuri quite complex, because of the destruction of cartilage, the joints are deformed and feet slightly displaced. To remedy the situation, Yuri had painful surgery: the bones were artificially broken and then raised a such a way that his feet still moved in the correct location. The case remained to restore the cartilage surface of the joint, to give him the opportunity to safely move his legs again.
For that to happen he needed the help of stem cell technology from the clinic iLaya. Modern medicine offers only for the joints to be replaced with artificial joints, and that is a direct path to many serious limitations and disability.
Recently, as part of the treatment, Yuriy had special biological knee joints made with a gel saturated is his own cells. According to the treatment plan, eventually to the joint bones will grow a necessary layer of cartilage, Yuriy himself has to rapidly move his legs so the new cartilage goes into the desired shape.
Fortunately, all of the required amount for Yuriy’s treatment has been collected thanks to your donations to the project Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded which allowed for the payment for the full course of treatment. Further recovery now depends on the skill of doctors and, to a large extent, the will of Yuriy. Unfortunately, he is not the only wounded fighter who can be helped by cellular technology in the iLaya clinic. But high-tech treatment requires significant costs that are beyond the capacity of most wounded’s families. They can only get help through your donations to the project Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded and then these guys have hope for further recovery and a full life. Do they not deserve our help?
