Arthrodesis. A rather scary word denoting stiff fixation of the joint or other semi-movable bone structure. Yevhen, one of the novices at the «Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded» project, is the patient whom this kind of surgery awaits tomorrow. Today the man has arrived in the clinic and is undergoing pre-surgical examinations to get onto the surgery table tomorrow.
Yevhen is suffering from continuous pain in the foot; the man is practically unable to walk – he can barely limp with a cane. This is due to consequences of an old injury: a couple of years ago he had been hit by an enemy shell fragment in Luhansk region where Yevhen was fighting with the 92nd Mechanized Brigade. His foot gone smashed out, and with the time doctors managed to heal his complex fracture, but the bones in the foot fused up in a somewhat wrong way. That is why after the process of fusion was completed, the bones of the talocalcaneal joint started to mechanically ruin one another under load. For today, destruction has considerably expanded, and the area of abrasion got heavily inflamed. This inflammation causes pain and will inevitably lead to further complications.

Regrettably, doctors at state hospitals gone short of possibilities soon, so the only way they could offer was symptomatic treatment of pain by means of plain painkillers. On the contrary, medics at the Biotech elaborated a clear plan of treatment aiming to remove the cause of the problem. As early as tomorrow the Project’s chief practitioner, Mr. Volodymyr Oksymets, is going to perform arthrodesis, a procedure implying stiff fixing of Yevhen’s astragalus and calcaneus to one another. With the time, when the joined bones get some rest, the inflammation will get soothed and the load borne by the damaged joint, will be distributed among the foot’s adjoining junctures. The man will get the chance to walk normally and without pain, and will even stop limping in a short period of time, the doctors promise.
Yevhen joined the Project just recently, but he has already got the full sum necessary for treatment. Our generous contributors made a considerable input, so People’s Project has already paid all the bills for treatment. Total sum which amounted to over 50,000 UAH, was raised by Sumy local community – both thanks to individual contributions made by sympathetic citizens and a charity auction titled “Time for Good Deeds”. The action was initiated by a charity foundation titled «Sumy», and Yevhen is sincerely grateful to these compassionate people.

Maybe the war is not among the hottest topics in media nowadays. Still for the guys suffering from serious injuries, the war is up and running: it is their war for health, a fight for salvation and heavy struggle for their last chance to avoid lifetime maim. And together we can prove quite helpful in this situation, because their chance (often the last one) can be realized at the expense of our donations solely.
