Just recently, one of the patients of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project Volodymyr had the apparatus of an external fixation dismantled. The specialists of The Ilaya Clinic completed the first stage of a treatment process. In terms of the project Volodymyr got his destroyed elbow joint of his left hand restored. Some time after the apparatus removal Volodymyr will spend at home and relax for a while, until the fused bone strengthened. Control examinations and a next stages of a treatment process follows, because the fracture is extremely complex and it needs further attention of doctors. Volodymyr is treated at the expense of people’s donations. For his recovery volunteers of The People’s Project collected near 400,000 UAH.
The last days with a metal inside
Volodymyr was injured near Saur-Mohyla in summer of 2014th. He got under the enemy fire, and caught a bullet with a hand. His left elbow joint was smashed to pieces. He spend 2 years at state hospitals, and went through 6 unsuccessful surgeries. The bone has not fused, and initial examination and X-rays, performed in terms of the project, showed, that the remains of the joint were just put together with screws and plates, one of which got broken eventually.
Of course, with the elbow like that it was impossible for Volodymyr to bend an injured hand, or use it anyhow. At public hospitals he was told to go home and hope it will got healed one day.
In terms of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project Volodymyr’s hand was freed from most of the metal fixators. The remains of bones were brought into a correct positions and fixed with an external fixation device. Place of an injury was filled with cellular materials. For this moment significant part of fused bones is in a correct position. But treatment is in progress. Some old screws were left in the bone. The fracture still needs some time to strengthen up. The treatment was made possible thanks to a talent of doctors of the project, and your contributions. If there were none of your donations in terms of The Biotech Volodymyr would be left with a crippled hand. The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project is not finished yet.
