Despite his circumstances, he remains positive. Viktor returned to the clinic – within the framework of the project Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded to pass the next stage of treatment of his extremely serious wounds. Previously, we already restored his bones to his leg.
Victor returns to the clinic for his operation
The doctors of the project managed to overcome the extensive osteomyelitis that destroyed the bones, and rebuild complex fractures that had not healed for a long time, as well as restore significant bone defects – about 12 centimeters of bone loss. The treatment plan has undergone some correction: due to the terrible infection and traumatic destruction, the restoration of the natural length of the leg during the first stage was not successful. So far, doctors have rebuilt the complex fractures with cellular technology, and now have installed an Ilizarov device to pull one of the bones in length using an already traditional method of treatment in the hope the bone can be extended by centimeters. In addition, during the operation, orthopedic plates that held fragments of the bones during the fusion were dismantled. This will greatly facilitate further rehabilitation.
And this is post-operation: the leg is fitted with an Ilizarov apparatus and he is soon to go home
In the war, Viktor was a volunteer. He was wounded in May 2015, in fierce battles, where he fought in the 11th Battalion Kyiv Rus. Not far from the notorious Busovka mine, the day before the unit was released from positions, the enemy fired on Ukrainian fighters. An explosive from an RPG went off near him. The cumulative shell tore off his left arm, while the explosion and the fragments severely injured his leg.
For a long time doctors fought to simply save Viktor’s life. When his condition was somewhat stabilized, ilaya clinic also joined in his treatment. At the Central Military Hospital in Kyiv, Viktor underwent several complex operations. At that moment, it was simply impossible to know the future fate of his leg. There was only one thing known: to restore the broken bones by traditional methods would not succeed, then, to complicate things further, widespread amputation would result in minimal chances, even for prosthetics.
Here is the terrible state of his leg in the beginning
It should be understood: all trauma from the beginning is considered to be infected. Shards, fragments, pieces of clothes, just dirt – all of it gets into a wound and immediately causes large-scale inflammation, which could last a long time and be difficult to overcome even with the strongest antibiotics. It is very difficult to overcome an infection of the bones: a considerable part of the infected and inflamed tissues, the cells where there is only dead bone and foci of pathogenic microorganisms, they have to be removed, and only this gives a tangible therapeutic effect. The same thing happened with Viktor: in his case, inflammation and shrapnel cumulatively destroyed 15 centimeters of both supporting bones of the leg.
If it were not for cellular technology, it would be impossible to restore such a defect. Specialists of the clinic have grown special bone fragments, which eventually were transplanted at the site of Viktor’s bone loss, and recovered a significant part of its length. However, due to the severe postinfectious destruction, today the defect remains about three centimeters. These centimeters will be restored by the classic method of stretching with the help of the Ilizarov apparatus.
Віктор та його чудова рідня – мама і молодший брат
Viktor, 20, is a passionate and sincere patriot, he, along with his mother, also brings up a brother. Now, after the main stage of treatment, Viktor is already walking with crutches. Imagine how difficult it is to walk when one leg is shorter than the other. We are certain that after the end of the current stage of treatment, he will have a new lease on life.
Maksim, Viktor and Volodymyr Mihaelovych
The whole course of treatment has already cost 700 000 UAH. The treatment is very complicated. Further work will also require some expenses. We can only imagine how much this amount is. However, in view of Viktor’s prospects, we simply cannot abandon it. That is why we once again turn to you for help. The state does not finance such a difficult recovery of the wounded, the Ministry of Health is reluctant to rely on new but effective methods of restoring severe injuries. That is why we at The People’s Project, we can pay all procedures exclusively from charitable donations to the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project.
