Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded

Miraculously saved: summing up the volunteer project that restores injured fighters

Dear friends, despite certain lack of news, the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project is going on. Let us describe you the current situation. At the moment, we have that intermediate period when a number of heavily wounded patients have completed their treatment and went into active rehabilitation. Some patients had another surgeries, and are now preparing for further treatment.

Recently, Vitaliy has visited the clinic. Seems like the doctors’ efforts resulted in positive outcome: despite all precautions, incredible complications and difficult course of restoration, Vitaliy managed to get up onto his feet. Today, the man is actively training his both legs. Perhaps now it still hurts, but Vitaliy’s intention to get back to normal life is unshakeable. Some time ago, Vitaliy’s unit participated in the attempt of de-blocking the defenders of Donetsk airport. At that time our military got under heavy firing attack, and an artillery mine exploded right in front of Vitaliy. His both legs got severely damaged in the blast, and doctors were implacable in their further plans: they insisted on amputation and prosthetics. Still The Biotech’s doctors’ skills and perseverance combined with cell technologies and Vitaliy’s own love of life plus your financial support gave our defender the second chance: the damaged bones got finally healed.

Another Vitaliy got his regular check-up lately, too: this guy got wounded for the third time when he got captured by the enemy. He joined the project a bit later than it was necessary – by then, a severe bone infection developed, and the injured leg shortened by 13cm. The treatment proved to be difficult and was accompanied by many complications. Eventually, doctors managed to overcome the infection and fuse the bone up in a few stages. Today, despite the initial intentions to restore natural length of the leg, the doctors still did not implemented this: the further treatment plan is to be agreed in a few months, when the bone has finally strengthened and the guy’s organism restored and replenish its energy to be ready to complete the whole course of treatment.

Recently, we have also seen Volodymyr. This nice man’s leg injured in an explosion, has also been restored in a few consequent stages. With application of cell technologies, doctors restored the heel bone torn off by the blast. Then, quite miraculously, in view of the leg’s previous condition, they also renovated the motion apparatus of the ankle joint: pulled the tendons up, formed new traction structures as well as treated a number of adhesions formed due to the inactivity of tissue resulting in its reduction and shortening. Nowadays Volodymyr is up on his own legs, though the slight lameness still remains. Unfortunately, the video in which he proves his ability to walk on his own legs, is of a poor quality, so we decided not to publish it here. During his treatment Volodymyr has mastered a new profession: he learnt a programming language and changed his life to the better. Well, that is a very satisfying news!

Sergiy Grand-in before surgery 2

Serhiy whose shoulder was damaged by an enemy bullet, has undergone his final surgery as well. The Project doctors formed up a new join head out of cell materials. Today, the whole newly implanted structure fused with the rest of tissues in the area of previous complex defect which enabled Serhiy to move his arm in full. Lately, doctors removed an orthopedic plate that fixed the new bone, and now Serhiy has started his rehabilitation course during which he gets accustomed to train his arm hard.

Also, we met a former (and, certainly, a future) bicyclist Dmytro whose elbow was severely damaged by a shotgun injury. Doctors of the Project restored his joint by means of cell materials. Recently, Dmytro has undergone the surgery aimed to finalize the entire course of treatment, so we sincerely hope that man will be able to get to active life again.

Still, there are some patients in the Project that require our future support. In particular, we should mention Petro: this guy had struck a mine which led to the loss of both his heel and practically the entire supportive structure of the foot. He had been saved from amputation and later went through several stages of restoration; today, his foot is being restored to its normal functioning condition. Now Petro is recovering after another stage of treatment at the same time preparing for another set of surgeries. Besides, he has been actively engaged in social activities: Petro is the guy who helped to expose fraudsters from the Medical social examination board involved in bribery who made money on wounded and disabled.

Two other guys are doing not that fine. Medicine is rather an uncertain science, and complications and consequences as well as the entire process of healing, not always can be foreseen in full. In the process of Ihor’s restoration, there emerged certain troubles. Despite his exceptionally complicated injury and almost 100 percent probability of amputation, everything started well: doctors performed a surgery, transplanted the bone that had been previously grown up for the patient, into the area of complex defect, and started to closely examine the process of restoration. But in the course of rehabilitation, in spite of the fusion and start of active restoration, Ihor’s body resisted, so the process went backwards. Hence, now we need to consider all the problems and adjust our plans to carry out the next stage of treatment. Well, we just cannot leave the guy to face his troubles on his own, can we?

Similarly, Mr. Serhiy’s situation is not that great as well. Despite the difficult and prolonged treatment complicated by severe bone infection, his restoration brought rather positive results. Still in the process of rehabilitation which the man underwent outside the Project’s clinic, at a conventional hospital, an infectious disease has developed in the affected area. Their doctors failed to provide him timely treatment, so infection destroyed the transplanted bone. Well, now we have to start everything over almost from the very beginning. let us reiterate that the Biotech project often makes literally the last chance for many wounded. Now, we have to consider the situation thoroughly to figure out what is next and what should be done not to waste that last minor chance and use it to the guy’s benefit.

Dear friends, that is why we ask you to help once again. Honestly, we need money. As we cannot rely on someone else’s support: all these costly medical procedures can be performed at the expense of your benevolent donations solely. Neither MOH nor any other institution or the state, are going to either participate or sponsor the treatment of the wounded fighters. Just try and imagine yourself in the place of our defender who lost his health while protecting his homeland and now has to face his troubles on his own. Haven’t they deserved our support? Besides, it is not about some astronomical amounts: a modest input of a few dozens of hundreds hryvnias will make quite a useful and highly appropriate assistance.

Dear friends, never hesitate to join in: together, we are doing a truly good and noble deed!
