Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded

Biotech saves another severely wounded fighter from maim

Back to war; actively in for sports; started a new life; enthusiastically dove into farming. Normally, we start our publications on recovered fighters in this manner. Usually it takes about a year and a half or more after they completed treatment within the Biotech, to get into our recovery reports. Another fighter started to practice surfing just three months after his complicated surgery. It feels exceptionally satisfying and at the same time unusual when the man who was unable to move his arm just recently, headed on vacation and started to load his newly restored limb. It feels twice as much rewarding because the range of motion that is required in rowing, some time ago was considered inaccessible for Serhiy: the character of his trauma implied that his arm could have remained disabled forever.

Sorry for somewhat poor quality of the photo: a man just tries to relax so doesn’t pose for it

A year ago an enemy bullet hit the man on his shoulder: Serhiy got wounded near the village of Shyroka Balka where he fought with the 95th Air Assault Brigade. Immediately after he got injured, the man was provided first medical aid and transported to a military hospital. A detailed examination showed that the bullet tore off a substantial part of the shoulder joint bone. After getting Serhiy stabilized, the medics began to decide on his further treatment. The thing was that the bone started to go necrotic due to poor blood circulation and general contamination of the wound.

It was transplantation that might help: doctors could take fragments of the ilium that makes a part of a pelvis, and form a new joint head out of it. This method implies certain limitations: the extent of the affected area would not allow a single operation, so Serhiy would have to undergo a number of painful surgeries followed by periods of prolonged rehabilitation. Moreover, no one could guarantee that the treated arm would restore its full functionality and natural motion range.

The bone defect is marked with red color here

An alternative option that offered the best way out was the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project’s approach, as restoration with application of cell technology virtually follows the natural way of healing, so no wonder it brings nearly flawless results.

At first stages, the doctors took cell material out of Serhiy’s own tissues; later, the biologists of the Project cultivated the cells at their labs having amassed the volume of stem cells up to the proper level. Meanwhile, the surgeons cleared the epicenter of injury and get the man prepared for further manipulations. This May, when the injuries got healed a bit, the doctors implanted the cell materials into the damaged area and formed a new joint head there. Has the innovative method of Serhiy’s treatment proved successful? His recent pictures can serve the most eloquent evidence of this. It has been just three months after his last surgery, and the man is already loading his newly restored arm quite markedly.

Unfortunately, the state neither supports nor uses the pioneering methods of restoration of heavily wounded fighters, perhaps due to their revolutionary innovative nature, but obviously in spite of their unique and undoubted effectiveness. Sadly enough, but the state keeps away from sponsoring these as well. This makes our veterans, the fighters who sustained heavy injuries and severe bone defects, to feel totally abandoned and deal with their troubles on their own. That is why within the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project we together try to do our best to give these people a chance for maximum restoration and finally bring them back to normal complete life. This is the job we can perform at the expense of your kind-hearted donations solely. In the Project’s description section, you can find profiles of the fighters who desperately need our support, and here is the link that will direct you to our online report displaying all the expenses and contributions into the Project’s account in real time. Dear friends, please join in: the Biotech is far from its completion yet, and the fighters who do not have any other chance, are relying on our support. So we just cannot deprive them of their ultimate hope, can we?
