Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded

Refusing to fuse up for three years: the Biotech becomes a way out for heavily wounded fighter

Mr Andriy visited the clinic once again. The man came over to remove the gypsum plaster, as his tibia has still been fixed with a stiff corset. Surprisingly for him, the check-up revealed that despite the bone tissue is being forming and the complex fracture fused, his leg still needs to get hardened and strengthen a bit. So Mr Andriy will have to spend some more time in gypsum.

1

The man joined the «Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded» project having his tibia crushed into small fragments. A while ago Mr Andriy who served with the 30th Mechanized Brigade, got under heavy shelling. It happened near Savur Mohyla: the enemy tanks shot at our positions almost directly. The outcome of the injury resulted in the missing head of the bone in the joint, the multifaceted fracture and constant load – no wonder that the man’s leg refused to fuse up for two and a half years, and later osteomyelitis developed in the area.

This is how the bone looked a year ago

Cell technologies proved effective in treatment of the complex wound: first the doctors put the fractured bones into their natural position, cleared the necrotic tissues and filled the defected zone with cell materials. Thanks to application of innovative technologies, the leg got fused up. Need to mention that there was also a number of supplementary urgent surgeries during which the doctors had to cleanse the wound from persisting bone infection developing in the area repeatedly. This impeded healing a lot. Besides, over time the doctors dissected the newly grown bone to straighten it – just due to this the bone has to stay fixed in a gypsum corset for some extra time.

This is how the tibia looks now: the complicated fracture started to add fresh bone tissue

Total course of the man’s treatment cost us over 400 thousand hryvnias. All these funds we, the volunteers of People’s Project, raised and paid at the expense of people’s donations as well as individual contributions. Still, the Project is not over with Mr Andriy’s recuperation: yet this December another three fighters are to undergo their treatment in the clinic. All this means money: as soon as the state keeps out of treatment of these heavily wounded fighters, we need to address you for help once again, as it is possible to get the injured guys back to active life exceptionally thanks to your enthusiastic involvement. Dear friends, please get involved as it is your contributions into the «Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded» project that allow bringing our defenders – those who sacrificed their well-being for our peace and security – back to normal and full life.
