Dear friends, we have got a new substantial addition to the Biotech. Just a couple of days ago we wrote about a new patient, Volodymyr, who had got a serious injury to his joint in the ATO zone. And now the Project has multiplied by another fighter. The newbie’s name is Yevhen, and he is suffering from severe pain.
Yevhen is complaining of continuous pain in the foot. The man fought with the 92nd Mechanized Brigade which he had joined in the very first days of the war. He served for about a year and went through all the hot-spots, specifically Ilovaisk Kettle, Stanytsia Luhanska, and Trehizbenka. Got wounded near the town of Shchastya, where a mine shell fragment hit his foot having almost destroyed the heel bone. Doctors at state hospitals managed to get the complicated fractures fused up. But later, despite Yevhen’s complaints of pain, the man was released from the hospital. For year and a half, the man had to hobble with a cane, and it was getting worse with the time. The only thing doctors could recommend to soothe the pain was a medication blockade. But it was not about finding out the cause of that pain. In despair, Yevhen applied to wounded fighters’ last hope, the «Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded» project.
Initial examination at ilaya clinic evidenced that it was not as good as doctors at the state hospitals supposed, and blockades were not enough. The bones fused up in a somewhat wrong way, so now when Yevhen’s foot is exposed to certain physical loads, the bones are getting damaged by one another. Over time the surfaces of the joint got worn off, and the smooth cartilage dissipated, so the adjoining tissues got affected by an inflammatory process. This causes constant pain.
These white spots are the bone tissue worn off by rubbing and inflammation
This kind of injury is hard to treat – the joint is one of the body’s most intricate flexible structures, so it will not work even if the leg is cut, the joint is disassembled, healed and re-assembled back: the structure of the foot is too complex. That is why Volodymyr Oksymets, the Project’s chief practicing surgeon and skillful orthopedist, has invented a different option. The doctors are going to carry out arthrodesis of the talocalcaneal joint, that is to join these bones into a stiff structure by means of a few screws to prevent the bones from rubbing and mutual damaging. The joint has already gone destroyed, and it hurts, so it is not about its restoration to normal condition. But after the fixation, on the contrary, the injured bones will have the chance to get recreated for some time: the traumatic inflammation will cease and the pain get soothed allowing Yevhen to load the foot habitually. The doctors are sure that the load will be distributed between the rest of joints in the foot, for Yevhen to be able to walk and step onto the foot in a usual manner and without any pain.
What we noticed about Yevhen – he is an extraordinarily amiable and companionable man who loves animals very much. Almost in each photo he is pictured hugging either a pup or a kitten and shining with kindliness
Now to the key point. Yevhen joined the Biotech having already possessed enough money for his treatment. This amount had been raised by Sumy town community, and we are going to tell you about these amazing people in detail a little later. As you see, this is another case when conventional medics give up and waive a patient, and Volodymyr Oksymets and the Biotech team carry out successful restoration of these difficult but not hopeless patients. As regards sponsoring of this process, the state officials’ mode of conduct is the same. They are ready to cut off, prosthetic and refuse to treat patients solely. But to support the treatment that has proved utterly effective – alas but no. That is why we, the volunteers at People’s Project, can pay for treatment of these fighters at the expense of your donations exclusively. Ordinary citizens who often donate just a couple of hryvnias; anonymous sponsors who sometimes pay for a whole course of treatment; entrepreneurs and businesses who recompense treatment of their former employees or simply contribute in treatment of casual participants they like; our colleagues from other charity foundations and public associations – all together we give our defenders arms and legs. Together, except for the main participant, the state. Please join the «Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded» project: thankfully, Yevhen has already obtained the required amount, still your generous input will help to save some other fighter. And they deserve our support, do not they?
