Doctor Volodymyr Oksymets stops his speedy flight along the corridor, looks at the patient attentively and wrinkles his forehead.
– You know what… You can leave right now.
Today we happen to witness this touching and nice scene with our own eyes: thanks to his wife the Biotech’s new patient Volodymyr got his early permission for leaving the hospital – three days ahead of time.
At this stage the doctors performed everything they had to – in the course of two surgeries they took Volodymyr’s biological material for further treatment; re-attached the external fixation apparatus; fixed the bone remnants in their proper physiological place and got them prepared to further treatment; besides, they removed damaged and necrotic tissues, and filled the cavities with a special cement. Now Volodymyr’s organism needs to take a little rest and invigorate, so the guy can spend certain period of time out of hospital, with his family.
Volodymyr joined the project about a month ago. His injury can be described easily: his arm simply lacks bones. They had been torn out last March, in the ATO zone, when an enemy mine went off just in front of him, and the only thing he had time to do was to protect his eyes with his forearm. The shell fragments hit him on the face and left numerous wounds, damaged Volodymyr’s eye and caused a badly injury to the forearm, having literally demolished its bones.
Quite naturally, the conventional medicine lacks effective methods allowing to restore such massive bone defects. So all the hopes were placed in the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project under which the ilaya clinic’s doctors re-grow absent bone fragments applying cellular technologies, and medical gel saturated with cultivated stem cells, is projected to fuse the bone remnants and the graft into a monolith living bone. Obviously, this technology is pretty expensive: the whole course of Volodymyr’s treatment costs almost 700,000 UAH, of which about a half we, volunteers at People’s Project, have already paid. As the state refuses to sponsor these methods of treatment of wounded, we have to pay bills at the expense of your contributions solely. Dear friends, Volodymyr has sacrificed his health and nearly lost his life for our peace. Logically, now it is our turn to help this nice cheerful man and a devoted father to come back to normal life, isn’t it?
