Few days ago experts of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project performed an additional surgery for the treatment of the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade soldier Andriy. And we hope this surgery is the last one. For 2 years he suffered from an injury, which he received in a difficult battle near Savur-Mohula, when the enemy shrapnel broke his leg. Andriy spend 18 month on crutches, wearing an Ilizarov apparatus. And despite the best efforts of doctors, and numerous surgeries the bone did not fused, and got infected with osteomyelitis. Hope for a recovery slowly faded away. He was a step away from an amputation, prosthesis and lifelong disability. Fortunately, Andriy joined the “Biotech”, where he immediately received professional medical care.
Current surgery has an aim to slightly correct a leg axis, because the leg twisted a little bit, while it been reconstructed with a cellular technology. Considering the initial injury, it is absolutely normal. This issue will be fixed during an extra stage of a treatment. Some time Andriy will spend wearing the same Ilizarov apparatus. However, after the treatment the range of a leg motion will expand significantly.
And now about the less pleasant aspect. A treatment of each seriously wounded soldier with the use of a cellular technology costs a lot of money. In case of Andriy it worth more than 400,000 UAH. We already covered 350,000 UAH, and about 60,000 UAH more remain to be covered. The government does not finance this kind of a treatment. It looks like seriously wounded fighters are written off the accounts. Horrifying prosthetic made according to a Soviet technology is the maximum, which they can expect from a “grateful” government. We are looking towards using the last chance, which is only possible at the expense of your donations in terms of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project. Together we have helped to recover dozens of injured soldiers. And we cant leave rest of them in trouble, so this is the priority.
