One of the participants of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project had been transferred to the primary stage of the treatment. The talk is about Olexander, who have no shoulder joint. Specialists of the Ilaya Clinic implanted into the wound three-dimensional bone matrix. On top of that, the affected area was filled with medical gel, saturated with patient’s own cells, which are supposed to form a new bone with a time. The treatment was financed by the volunteers of The People’s Project. The donations covered most of the expenses but whole amount have not been collected yet.
The injuries are extremely complex, so the surgery is managed by the Volodymyr Oksymets’ personally
Alexander joined The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project the moment he realized that the state medicine can’t help him. He received severe injury in April 2016th, during the battle in the industrial zone near Avdiivka. It is terrible to say, but Olexander caught a grenade fired from AGS (automatic grenade launcher) with his body. The explosion occurred right at the left shoulder. It is a miracle that man survived at all. The only thing that was seriously injured is his shoulder where his left shoulder joint was completely destroyed. At the moment left arm and forearm bones are crushed to pieces and ruined by osteomyelitis. Despite all the efforts of state hospital and military doctors, their capabilities have the limit. Olexander was offered with either artificial joint, which drastically limits the mobility of the hand, or arthrodesis, that will make hand completely fixed and unmovable. That’s why he decided to take a chance, and trusted his hand to the latest technologies.
The bones that form the shoulder joint are virtually destroyed by the explosion and osteomyelitis
At the time, Olexander is recovering from the surgery. The next inspection is scheduled on six weeks from now. Till then formation of the new bone from the man’s own cells should be finished. Shortly after the doctors will make update to the treatment plan, and full mobility of the Oleksandr’s left hand would be restored eventually.

Due to The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project the Ilaya Clinic provides substantial discounts to treat seriously wounded soldiers. The experts of the clinic provide their services almost for free, considering only cost of the materials. Despite such an altruistic financial policy, treatment of Olexander costs near 0.7 million UAH. The alternatives are either a lifelong disability or amputation. Unfortunately, the state does not provide such expensive treatment for the defenders of Ukraine. The only way for them to receive the descent help are donations collected through The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project, which can give soldiers a chance to return to normal.
