Scientists from the University of California plan to start addressing the growing need for transplantation of human organs by using the bodies of pigs. Reports The People’s Project referring to the Daily Mail. According to scientists, it will help solve the problem of the shortage of donor organs – the newspaper writes.
In the near future, researchers are going to grow in a human body a porcine pancreas. A pregnant pig will nurture the embryo pancreas which consists of human cells. However, the experiment will last only 28 days, after the deadline, the chimeric embryos are removed and examined. Development of further embryos are not allowed – this is to prevent any bizarre animal being born as a result of these experiments, according to scientists.
To create embryos with human cells as their primary genes, the swine pancreas is edited using CRISPR technology. After that, the embryo will be introduced to induced human pluripotent stem cells, which then means it can be introduced to the human body.
Pablo Ross, head of research, hopes that the use of animals as an incubator for the necessary human organs will be successful, and the pancreas is suitable for transplantation. Experts also believe the in the bodies of pigs can be grown organs not only to combat gastric cancer, but also the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and cornea.
Experiments on creation of such chimeras as expected, were sharply criticized by animal rights advocates who believe such research to be inhumane and unethical. In addition, they argue that there is a risk that human stem cells in the brain of the experimental pigs may change them and make them more…human.
Ukraine also has made great achievements in the development and application of cellular technology. Ukrainian biotechnology has restored bone, tissue and nerve cells. This technology is being used to restore damaged joints and limbs in injured ATO soldiers, returning them to function and mobility. This technology is offered by only a few clinics throughout the world, including in Ukraine. Ilaya Medical Company and The People’s Project, under the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project, treats seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers and returns them to a normal, healthy life.
Earlier, The People’s Project reported the incredible restoration of the bone in a 19-year-old’s leg. Recently doctors formed new bone in a wounded soldier from the “Donbas” Battalion.
In the project Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded, iLaya clinic doctors are using the latest biotechnology restore the damaged limbs of wounded Ukrainian soldiers.
Currently the collection of funds for the treatment of five wounded is underway and four more are waiting in line to join the project. For them biotechnology represents their only chance for recovery. Since the state, through legislative and other restrictions, can not support biotechnology in the treatment of wounded soldiers, their only hope lies with people.
We ask you to get involved and help Ukraine’s defenders.
