Fighter from the “Donbas” Battalion, Sviatoslav is preparing for discharge after completing the primary treatment phase for the defect to his left humerus. The wounds have healed, and the stitches have been removed. In six months a control X-ray will e taken after which doctors will plan the next operation on his hand.
We wish the soldier a speedy recovery to his arm, which Sviatoslav, dreams of again firing a machine gun with as soon as possible.
Recall that Sviatoslav was enrolled in the project in spring 2015 with an 8-centimeter defect of the proximal shoulder. Some of the bones that form the shoulder joint were completely absent. In such cases, conventional medicine applies only to endoprosthesis – artificial replacement of the shoulder joint.
During his treatment under the Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded project, the soldier underwent sampling of cellular material and red bone marrow from the ilium and from a periosteum fragment of the fibula, as well as several preparatory operations on his shoulder. On November 3 2016 Sviatoslav, completed the replacement of the humerus defect with a block of osteoplastic material and autologous stem cells.
The treatment of Sviatoslav has been one of the most prominent cases in the project, because of his injuries, a unique 3-D matrix had to be completed, the large number of cells that had to be cultivated and the number of surgeries to restore bone, cartilage and muscle.
The People’s Project thank everyone who helped raise the 512,774 UAH to treat the fighter. Fundraising for other wounded soldiers continues. Every hryvnia is important because at stake is the health of Ukraine’s defenders.
