The gradual restoration of the right humerus of wounded soldier Oleg can be seen in another control X-ray. Another X-ray confirmed recovery processes in his right femur. Also, on doctor’s advice, he begins to more actively exercise his leg and place load on it.
His wife Mariana helps Oleg deal with exercising the foot, because the condition of the foot after a such a long fixation period requires persistent effort. The main thing is that after this long break, Oleg begins to feel confidence in using the leg. Active callus (new bone) has formed, and this is clearly seen if we compare the new image with the previous one.
He hope Oleg recovers mobility and look forward to his first steps without crutches.
Almost two years ago, in July 2014, Oleg was wounded. Then, he miraculously survived only thanks to a comrade, 19-year-old Michael, who gave his life shielding him. In the attack near Latugyne, Oleg was the sole survivor from 10 of his brothers.
His story has been told in many journals (in Russian), in Ukraine. Especially his true confession about how his love for a girl gave him the strength to live. We are happy to have the opportunity to help Oleg and his wife Mariana. We hope this test for them will be the beginning of a long and happy life together.
Oleg is one of the most difficult patients treated by the project. To Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded he came after six months of treatment of his bone injuries in public hospitals. During this time, no recovery processes in the bones of his arm and leg were observed, because these injuries can not be cured by traditional methods.
Oleg’s diagnosis: defect to the humerus of 12cm, nonunion fracture of the upper third of the femur with a defect of 3cm, varus deformity of the foot.
The treatment and recovery of the fighter thus far is as follows:
02.2015 – Collecting cellular material (red bone marrow from the ilium bone fragment from fibula).
04.2015 – Dismantling of external fixation device on the right shoulder, removal of bone chips and adaptive resection. In place of the bone defect was introduced block osteoplastic material with autologous stem cells, which was fixed in place with a metal plate, dismantling the apparatus of external fixation on the right thigh. The leg was then set in plaster.
05.2015 – Preparatory operation on the thigh – fistulas sequestration necrectomy tamponade with the goal of treating osteomyelitis in the ocular cavity and create better conditions for the introduction of cell-tissue material. Humerus shows signs of actively growing.
10.2015 – Surgery to correct the deformity of the foot using Ilizarov apparatus. The soldier began to regain full use of his hand, which was restored using cellular technology.
02.2016 – Dismantling Ilizarov apparatus on the foot, stretching the thigh, fixation and use of block and chips osteoplastic material with autologous stem cells to treat nonunion fractures and femoral shortening. Fixing the femur using plates and external fixators. A soldier is actively exercising his foot.
04.2016 – Dismantling of external fixation device from the thigh. Femoral bone grows actively.
Thanks to your help and participation Oleg was able to be treated, which gave him hope for recovery. Now it is the turn of many other men wounded while defending Ukraine to receive treatment. They deserve to fulfill their dream of a happy and healthy future.
